Dodo Trail, Mauritius
At first glance, an island of 65km long by 60km wide doesn’t promise vast spaces to run in; but don’t be fooled by the size of the tropical paradise that is Mauritius. The utter abundance of volcanic peaks, expansive forests and endless beaches turn this island into trailrunning heaven!
The annual Dodo Trail event makes for mental off-road running, with distances of 5, 10, 25 and 50km to choose from. Take note, though: extreme terrain, technical routes and gruelling ascents mean you’d better prepare yourself for an epic outing. Book well in advance for this world-class trail run, scheduled for early July every year. Check out dodotrail.com for more.
The good news is that there are dozens of other adventure activities to experience in gorgeous Mauritius, from snorkelling, hiking, scuba diving and game fishing, to exceptional SUP and surf breaks – not to mention the beautiful people. Visit tourism-mauritius.mu for more info.
BEST TIME TO RUN
These are the tropics, so you can be sure of high humidity and day-time temperatures during summer. Winters are generally mild at around 25°C, but with the occasional cold front to add a slight edge to your day out on the mountain.
Direct flights from South Africa to Mauritius are offered by SAA and Air Mauritius, among others. Cost per person will depend on the tourism season, but look at around R9 500.
