Theewaterskloof Bass Classic
The Theewaterskloof Bass Classic is an annual event held by the Tafelberg Bassmasters. It is the biggest bass fishing event of the year on the Theewaterskloof calendar. It boasts prizes over the value of R130,000 with the result that everybody walked home with something. This year the name sponsor was iRecall Mobile Recording. It was another very well organized and well run event, with great comradery and some big bass.
Theewaterskloof is the biggest body of water in the Western Cape. Even with it being lower than usual for this time of year it still offers plenty to fish, in the likes of laydowns, standing timber, bridge pylons and riprap. It is an excellent bassing venue for an event like this, not to mention that the current Western Province Largemouth Bass record of 5kg plus making this it’s home. It is hosted by Tafelberg Bassmasters, at the Theewaterskloof Sports Club, which offers excellent camping facilities, a great restaurant and a very inviting bar.
The iReCall Theewaterskloof Bass Classic is the first event of the New Year and is always a great event to start the New Year off. It attracts all types of fisherman and welcomes anyone with a boat and rod to join in on the fun not only on the water but off the water too. It is a two day event, with a biggest bag weight of four fish over two days and a biggest fish prize for the biggest bass caught on the second day. This year with biggest bag was Team Berkley - Vega Graphics, James Roberts and Vincent de Boer with a total bag weight of 5,88kg with only three fish to take top honours, and the biggest fish on day two went to Team Mysterytacklepack, Rory Heidmann and Ferdi Black with a 2,08kg fish taking home a cool R5000 cash.
Although Theewaterskloof allows for many techniques, and most can prove successful, you will find a lot of anglers pulling out the good old faithful pitching rod here, with an immense amount of standing timber and laydowns, it is a tried and tested way of hauling out some Theewaterskloof pigs. It proved itself again this year around. A Texas rigged pitching bait is the way to go, with some anglers’ getting right up in the timber to reap the rewards. If this so happens to fail, weightless Senkos can be a very good backup.
All in all the iReCall Theewaterskloof Bass Classic is a event every angler should have down on their calendar, if they looking for a great event with the possibility of catching big fish with great prizes, this year being no different.
A big thank you to all the sponsors on board this year and a very well done to Tafelberg Bassmasters for hosting another great event.
