No-ah show disappoints fans
TREVOR Noah fans are devastated that the comedian and The Daily Show host has baled at the last moment from hosting tonight’s MTV Music Africa Awards (Mamas) in Joburg.
Noah, via his Twitter account yesterday, said he was suffering from a severe respiratory and ear infection. Radio and TV personality Bonang Matheba has been roped in to replace him for the ceremony at the Ticketpro Dome in Joburg.
Fans on Twitter were disappointed, and some went as far as trying to sell their tickets. “Guys, my friends and I bought #MAMAs tickets cos we wanted to see Trevor. Now we don’t wanna go. 4 MAMAs tickets for sale, DM me Please” tweeted @Lerato74029081.
Others slammed MTV for choosing Bonang as Noah’s replacement. Lucky Mtetwa Emondlo tweeted: Only if you replaced @Trevornoah with @skhumbi not with that boring voice ka @bonang_m @ mamas.”
Some fans thought Noah was f aking. Shookiswa tweeted: “Trevor Noah is sick but apparently he has a show tomorrow at the Apollo.”
In a statement released by Noah yesterday on Twitter, he said that despite tons of medication his infection had not got any better. “The doctor has ordered me to rest my voice and recover. I desperately wish I could dismiss my doctor but flying would be highly irresponsible and may cause further damage,” Noah said in the statement he photographed and posted.
The comedian said it had been his long-held dream to host the awards. “I push myself as hard as I can. Unfortunately there comes a day when it catches up and my body cannot do what my mind wishes. I’m sorry if I’ve disappointed you (the fans) but I love performing more than anything so cancelling breaks my heart.”
Although MTV Africa expressed its disappointment at Noah’s cancellation, the channel said it was thrilled to have Matheba.
The awards air live on MTV (DStv on 130) and MTV Base (DStv on 322) at 9pm.
