German Club deserves a rousing ‘oompah’

My other dining partner, who is Austrian, ordered the pork schnitzel which was a little over-crumbed but he said it was delicious and authentic.

There are several options for the chicken and pork schnitzels, including cheddarmelt.

Other starters include other traditional German dishes such as mini frikkadels with German mustard at R48, pretzels with butter at R20 and pretzels with ham and cheese at R29.

There is a range of usual salads and burgers, but my advice is to try out the German specialities such as the sausage platter consisting of chopped bratwurst and bockwurst with chips at R109; creamed pork fillet goulash served with spaetzle (a soft egg noodle found in southern Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Hungary at R71; and fleischkase which is a German meat and cheese dish with two fried eggs and panfried potatoes for R55.

Side dishes include German rye bread and butter, spaetzle, rosti and potato dumplings. There is no set menu for desserts and diners have to ask for what is available.

Events, including a “bierfest”, are held annually with lively German oompah bands. There is a big and secure parking area.
