GOOD TACKLE, JR
JOHN Robbie asked in his column last Saturday: what are the most irritating things in rugby today? Some of the things he suggests are meant to stir debate – nothing wrong with that.
In my view (having watched Rugby Union for about 55 years), viewers want to see fast, attacking rugby from a good defensive base and their preferred team to win. However, there seems to be a dictum that defence wins matches and tournaments – dull, boring.
To facilitate attacking, fast play I would suggest forward passing be allowed up to the 22 instead of hoofing the ball up-field, almost always losing possession, resulting in the aerial ping pong, which JR also dislikes.
Thank you JR for your always interesting and provocative read – love it.
