On the Fifth Night

South African Country Life - - Country Escapes -

Michael Howard is both author and publisher of this book that sets out to share what turns out to be in part his own story through the main character Mark Hanson. Like Hanson, Howard loses his first wife to Huntington’s disease – what he describes as ‘a cruel, genetic disease that gradually robbed her of everything over a period of twelve years until she took her last breath staring into the room around me.’ He is also founder of the Huntington’s Association of South Africa.

But that’s just where the journey starts.

Later in a ‘moment of madness’ Hanson punches his second wife in the face – with disastrous consequences. There are children and relationships in the mix, mysticism and mediation – and a tightrope walk along the fine line between madness and sanity. It’s worth knowing that Howard describes himself as a warrior and a priest and has studied engineering, theology and philosophy. This book will find resonance in anyone who has questioned their life, fate and destiny.
