With his wife Sally he has au­thored sev­eral books on in­dige­nous gar­den­ing, and con­trib­uted to the Roberts VII Mul­ti­me­dia project on South­ern Africa’s birds. Among his pri­vate pas­sions are chess (school cham­pion), bridge (played for Wales) and cricket (bat­ting av­er­age be­gan with a dec­i­mal point).
