Cute things capture hearts and, wow, this little meerkat peeping over a fence pole at Mata Mata rest camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park tugs at mine. Braeme has cleverly limited the depth of field and yet kept the eyes of the meerkat crystal sharp. This draws my eye straight onto the key element in the picture (in this case, the meerkat) while any potential distractions like the background have been reduced. Even the pole, which is an important part of the picture, has taken a bit of a backseat by being slightly out of focus. Lastly, the little chap is sitting on the thirds line, which is well balanced and always a comfortable spot when it comes to composition.
