To regular contributor Leon Marshall, conservationists remain a special breed, and he constantly marvels at the way they dedicate their lives to protecting Mother Nature from the harm others inflict on her so thoughtlessly (and often maliciously). Leon moved to Knysna shortly after last year’s devastating fire along the Garden Route, and witnessed first-hand how vital the immense amount of work was in getting the extravagantly beautiful Garden Route declared as an international biosphere reserve. It’s a great success story, but an ongoing one, and getting this gigantic garden of nature back into tip-top shape is one that is ongoing. Says Leon, “There’s a big job ahead,” which you can read about in Tending Nature’s Garden on page 42.
