From taking his first snaps as a teenager on a school tour, photographer Francois Pistorius, who shot this issue’s Country
Chef feature, got his initial break in fashion photography in Europe. He swiftly learned the ins and outs of the industry, from lighting to film, polaroids and workflow. His career took him far afield, and he has lived and worked in Paris, London and Stockholm exposure that resulted in a unique style that focuses above all on two things. Thing 1 is to keep it simple. “Simplicity is the goal, but often so hard to master.” Thing 2 is that lighting is vital. “It’s everything, no matter the subject.” See Francois’ superb images in our feature Stark Contrast on chef Mune Kimura of the Postcard Café (page 96).
