Underberg vs Himeville

South African Country Life - - Travel -

Himeville lies about six kilometres north of Underberg. Established in 1902, the village was equipped with its own magistrate, police station and prison. Apparently, this caused much duplication and led to hostility between the two villages. However, united by decree in 2000, they’re harmonious neighbours at last. Himeville has retained its unique character. Attractions include the highly-rated museum occupying what was the last fortified laager built in South Africa (033 702 1184, closed Mondays). Almost opposite is the Stonehouse. Built in 1899 of the same stone as the laager, it accommodated that facility’s staff. Today it houses a café (033 702 1154), an antique and collectables shop (033 702 1879) and, in an outbuilding, Berg Weaving Company (also 033 702 1879).

Rest Your Head

From camping to sophisticated hotels, there’s no shortage of accommodation to suit all budgets. I stayed at the Cedar Garden, conveniently situated in town and set in a magnificent garden, a gracious house that offers spacious B&B accommodation and warm hospitality (033 701 1153, www.cedargarden.co.za).

Eat Out

There are about 20 eateries in the district serving anything from Afro-Continental fare at the Lemon

Property Peep

Recently retired Acutts estate agent, John Nothard, says the average price of a stand-alone house ranges between R800 000 and R1.2-million, while townhouses fetch between R1.4-million and R1.8million. With many people retiring to Underberg and Himeville, there is a big demand for retirement properties, although at this stage, limited frail-care facilities are available. Rental properties are also in high demand.
