Trip Down Memory Lane

South African Country Life - - Your Letters -

More than a year ago, I found a COUNTRY LIFE magazine. Everything I read fascinated me, so my husband and I decided to take out a year’s subscription. I anticipated the arrival of our first magazine, the June 2017 issue.

You can understand my shock and surprise, when my fingers stopped paging at the sight of a black-and-white photo of my mother as an acrobat in the Pagel’s Circus (taken around 1951). What I wasn’t aware of, was that some of the family photos I owned, were also in the possession of the lady who runs the Pagel House B&B in Aberdeen. I immediately contacted Lyn Dugmore, who was keen to meet up and share information.

A year later, we booked into the Pagel House B&B. Much of the guest house reminds of a bygone era. Our host was welcoming and spent time with us, sharing her knowledge about Pagel’s Circus.

I was 22 when my mom died of a brain tumour and, due to a long illness, much of her circus life died with her. Having this experience has added new memories that my children can pass on to their children one day.
