Huge pressure on coach to bring cups to Chiefs
Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has been under pressure for a long time but remains determined to bring success to the club.
Komphela enters his third season as Amakhosi coach, and with the first two having produced nothing, his resolve will be further tested in the new campaign.
“If you are at Chiefs and you get nothing, it does not go well. Positives count for nothing if you don’t have a trophy,” Komphela said. The 50-year-old coach appeared ready to once again roll with the punches until he succeeds in bringing silverware to Naturena.
“The greatest growth happens in discomfort. You want to grow more? Accept more pressure. You don’t want to grow? Sit at home, relax and don’t welcome pressure. So to me, I’m not the same person I was before I came here,” he stated.
“The ambition remain the same and the brief or mandate is that Chiefs must win trophies like any other big team.”
Chiefs will find out how ready they are for the season when they meet nemesis Orlando Pirates in the Carling Black Label Cup at FNB Stadium on Saturday (3.30pm).
Komphela won’t have much control of the tie because the supporters pick the starting eleven.
Yet he is fully aware that he’ll nonetheless be under the spotlight during the Soweto Derby.
“It’s going to be a nice experience, but we get information from these matches. The mission for this season is to bring excitement, play good football and please our people.
“There are lots of people who want to see this team succeed. This team was built on a culture and tradition of winning trophies,” he added.
