Long-haul survival

For those of you over six foot who struggle to find somewhere to cram your legs on long-haul flights, take heart from the words of (tall) adventure traveller Wes Siler.

Writing in Outside magazine, Siler recommends staying happy and positive, treating everyone nicely and just being Zen about the whole thing.

Also this: “Being crammed into a sealed canister of recirculated farts with hundreds of the worst people on Earth will always be a little easier if you have some alcohol in you.”

Belt up — and stay there

Anyone who doubts the wisdom of keeping your seatbealt fastened while flying should watch the video of the carnage in the cabin of an Aeroflot Boeing 777, which encountered severe turbulence on approach to Bangkok. People — including three babies — luggage and food were strewn over the cabin, with 20 people left injured, some seriously. Always keep your belt fastened, even if only loosely. Your back and neck will thank you.
