I’ve had a number of queries about the egg shortage and I, too, discovered an empty space where the eggs are usually stacked in my local supermarket. I immediately thought it had to do with the severe drought in the Cape but not so, according to Dr Charlotte Nkuna, interim CEO of the South African Poultry Association, who says that drought is not a factor at this point, and the shortage is due to the huge impact of avian flu disease, with more than four million laying hens dying of flu or being culled due to the disease.
