‘Inxeba’ takes golden horns at Saftas

● It’s been a double comeback for Xhosa film Inxeba (The Wound).

After recently returning to cinemas following a high court ruling that its X18 rating be lifted, the film was the biggest winner at the South African Film and Television Awards held at Sun City last night.

Inxeba took home five prized golden horns, scoring awards for best directing, best scriptwrit­ing, best actor and best feature film. On Thursday night, it was awarded a Safta for best editing.

Director John Trengove said: “It means a lot to receive this recognitio­n from the industry, since the fight for Inxeba has become a fight for artist freedom.” The award for best actor in a feature film went to Nakhane Touré, who plays the lead role.

The gong for best actress in a feature film went to Crystal-Donna Roberts in Krotoa, the story of a feisty Khoisan girl removed from her family to serve Jan van Riebeeck.

SABC1 drama Tjovitjo scooped five golden horns, for best drama, best editing, best sound design, best art production and best cinematogr­aphy. In the same subcategor­y, Mzansi Magic’s iNumber Number earned one gong for best achievemen­t in directing. Prison series Lockdown scored the award for best scriptwrit­ing.

Thuso Mbedu won the award for best actress in a TV drama for her role as Winnie on Is’thunzi. Mzansi Magic’s Isibaya won golden horns for best TV soap and best directing.
