● The Zimbabwe rugby team’s ordeal in Tunis when they slept on the street made many a headline this week. Team officials apparently were dissatisfied with the accommodation arranged for them, with two of their gripes apparently the lack of a swimming pool at their designated hotel and very slow internet speed. We can only imagine the mixed metaphors coach Peter de Villiers might have dreamt up while snoozing on the pavement. “Whether you sleep on the job, or on the street, money still buys the whisky.”

Or in this case the sandwiches and drinks.

● WP president Thelo

Wakefield pleaded the fifth when asked about the future of Stormers coach Robbie Fleck. Before this weekend’s Super Rugby action the Stormers had lost four matches in a row and were 12th on the points table. Said Wakefield: “I feel it is unethical to discuss the future of the coach until I’ve addressed the board. I feel it is unethical to discuss the future of a staff member with you. Don’t you agree?” The reporter was a little stumped because that’s exactly why he called.

● Ashwin Willemse this week graduated from Wits with a Masters degree in Entrepreneurship and New venture creation. With distinction, nogal. The former Bok wing would have been relieved to make the headlines and have social media aflutter for reasons other than his abrupt drop-mic-exit-stage-left move in the SuperSport studios in May. Come to think of it, with that degree he can start his own channel.

● Whoever runs the Jaguares’ website clearly hasn’t set foot in South Africa. In explaining the team’s travel arrangements this week the website noted: “On Wednesday, the team will depart, via Sao Paulo to Johannesburg, to then make an internal flight in the African country and arrive in Pretoria for the first commitment.” We doubt even the Guptas would have the temerity to fly that many people over that distance.
