TRACKS
Freya Ridings Lost Without You
The London singer’s single is the kind of song that would play at hipster weddings in the forest and on Twilight soundtracks. It’s dreamy, piano-driven indie. Ridings’ voice is reminiscent of London Grammar’s Hannah Reid.
Jakarumba Uthando
The kwaito legend and Trompies member is ready for wedding season, because this is the kind of song you might hear at a wedding or two in December. While the track has a romantic sentiment, one can almost see it inspiring your favourite drunk uncle to attempt some pantsula dancing.
ALBUMS
Buddy Harlan & Alondra
Compton — the California ghetto — occupies an influential space in rap music. Game, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E and Pulitzer Prize winner Kendrick Lamar all hail from there. Joining that esteemed list is Buddy, whose debut album is a great addition to West Coast hip-hop: it’s experimental (somewhat reminiscent of Georgia/ Atlanta icons Outkast), a little serious but also a little fun.
The Internet Hive Mind
Despite each member of this five-person group releasing their own (fairly different) solo albums, The Internet’s new album is a cohesive, wellgelled project. It doesn’t feel like five artists fighting for dominance. It’s neo-soul, it’s funk, it’s pop... it’s dreamy, it’s dope and it’s sexy. In other words, it’s cool kid music.
