An ancient custom in Russia is for travellers to take a moment before they leave the house to sit down and be silent for a minute or two. Some say the practice of “Sidet’ na chemodanak­h“— literally “sitting on suitcases” — comes from the notion of domestic spirits, who will take this opportunit­y to alert you if you’ve forgotten anything. Others use it to pray for a safe trip.
