An ancient custom in Russia is for travellers to take a moment before they leave the house to sit down and be silent for a minute or two. Some say the practice of “Sidet’ na chemodanakh“— literally “sitting on suitcases” — comes from the notion of domestic spirits, who will take this opportunity to alert you if you’ve forgotten anything.
