TOKYO HAS THE BEST REP

A poll of opinions about 56 cities shows safety a priority. By Elizabeth Sleith

-

Tokyo has just been named the world’s most highly thought-of city in an annual poll, shooting up 11 places from last year. In the poll, by research company The Reputation Institute, more than 12,000 people in the G8 countries were asked to rate 56 different cities — selected for the size of their GDP and population — according to three general categories: environment, infrastructure, and economy.

Measuring perceptions in several areas, the survey found that safety, beautiful environments, and respected leaders are the cornerstone of a well-respected city.

Interestingly, for the first time, safety was considered more important than beauty.

Last year’s winner, Copenhagen, fell to the third spot overall, although it is still thought of as number one when it comes to safety.

Of the 12 US cities on the list, San Francisco was the country’s top scorer, coming in 20th overall.

The only African city on the list was Cairo, which came in secondlast, just ahead of Moscow.
