● At this time of the year, when everyone is exhausted, most of us feel fairly disengaged but, come January, some of us will be ready to be committed employees.

Deon Smit and Muhammed Goolab from the South African Reward Association say that as many as 85% of employees are disengaged, at any time of the year. These workers have mentally “checked out” and essentially sleepwalk through their day.

They have no passion or energy, and they “withdraw themselves mentally and emotionally from their jobs”.

Smit and Goolab have some advice on how to reach these workers:

● Make sure a culture of engagement is evident from the top of the organisation. Uninspired management will never be able to spread the engagement word.

● Few people join a journey when they don’t know where they are going. Managers must send clear messages about what the organisation wants to achieve.

● Celebrate your employees’ contribution to the shared vision of the company, and

● Use performance appraisals to develop clear career paths with your team. – Margaret Harris
