Venice tourist tax gives a sinking feeling

A tourist tax that Venice is to introduce in May has been criticised by Italy’s tourism minister as “useless and damaging”.

Plans to charge tourists à3 (R46) were announced this week by city mayor Luigi Brugnaro. The fee will rise to à8 in high season and à10 during “critical” times. But tourism minister Gian Marco Centinaio asked on Twitter: “Do we want to become a country that repels tourists?”
