A NIGHT WITH THE GLAM SQUAD

Craig Jacobs mixes with the A-Listers

OTT coifs, crowd-pleasing performances and a smattering of beautiful faces — the Sofn’free HairXperts Masters Challenge event last Sunday night was a hair-raising affair.

First up I meet actress Buhle Samuels, whose gorgeous tresses deserve a hair contract (hint hint), and another striking actress, Simphiwe Ngema, who recently married actor and singer Dumi Masilela. Congrats! Someone not married is Thato Makgaka, who appears in the latest series of that lowbrow reality TV show, Diski Divas, which is meant to track the fabulous lives of local soccer WAGs.

It turns out that Thato’s claim to fame on the show is that she’s the baby mama to Orlando Pirates star Oupa Manyisa’s kid — although the midfielder says otherwise and has posted the results of his paternity test on his Instagram feed to prove it. Ouch! The female DJ was at the event filming footage for the show with Thandeka Mokoena, former wife of Kaizer Chiefs player Nkosinathi Nhleko.

I hope you guys will be spilling the tea, I tell the two, pointing out how controversial previous series of the show have been. They assure me things are set to heat up.

Next I say hello to the talented Modiselle sisters Refilwe, Candice and Bontle before heading into the venue to be entertained by crowd favourite Somizi Mhlongo, who is wearing a typically OTT outfit with the thickest platform heels ever created.

“This is better than the Samas. This is it!” he announced, before turning to his chunky footwear to admit: “These shoes . . . will be the end of me . . .” And proceeding to take them off right there on stage.

Those entertaining performances were courtesy of Amanda Black, who opened the show with her hit track and hiphopster Kwesta, who thrilled with his hits

and (and who caused swoons among the lady folk when they heard how deep and sexy his voice is after Somizi egged him on to say “hello”).

But you will want to know about the hair, and thanks to the clever Jan Malan production, this was an event where, courtesy of a nifty hair cam, the follicles were truly on show.

With dos, including one in the shape of red lips, another as a cube (perfect when you need to go incognito) and a head-to-toe hair dress, we marvelled at the artistry of the technicians, including the night’s big winner, Treavor Mokoaleli, who was crowned this year’s hair master and who bagged himself a cool quarter of a million randelas for his efforts.
