Newly elected ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa tells the first sitting of the National Executive Committee that there will be ample time to ‘manage the transition’ – shutting down efforts by Zuma detractors to begin a discussion about the removal of Zuma.
ANC NEC member David Masondo raises a motion that Zuma should exit the presidency. His inputs gain steam and the ANC NEC decides that the top-six leaders should begin a discussion with Zuma about his exit from office.
The ANC’s National Working Committee decides that the party’s top-six officials must tell Zuma to resign and ensure the resignation happens before the State of the Nation address.
The ANC top six meet with Zuma at his Pretoria official residence where they ask him to resign from office.
An urgent meeting of the ANC’s National Working Committee is called at Luthuli House where they hear a report-back from the officials on their meeting with Zuma. The NWC hears how Zuma claims to still enjoy support and his refusal to resign from office. The NWC decides to hold an urgent NEC meeting on Wednesday evening and recommends that Zuma be removed from office.
Ramaphosa meets with Zuma after the SONA is postponed indefinitely. In the meeting, Zuma agrees to resign pending a number of preconditions. As a result, the NEC meeting called for Wednesday is cancelled.
Ramaphosa issues a statement saying a decision on Zuma’s fate will be announced in the coming days. He says he is due to have follow-up discussions with Zuma.
