JAN 10:

Newly elected ANC Pres­i­dent Cyril Ramaphosa tells the first sit­ting of the Na­tional Ex­ec­u­tive Com­mit­tee that there will be am­ple time to ‘man­age the tran­si­tion’ – shut­ting down ef­forts by Zuma de­trac­tors to be­gin a dis­cus­sion about the re­moval of Zuma.

JAN 19:

ANC NEC mem­ber David Masondo raises a mo­tion that Zuma should exit the pres­i­dency. His in­puts gain steam and the ANC NEC de­cides that the top-six lead­ers should be­gin a dis­cus­sion with Zuma about his exit from of­fice.

JAN 29:

The ANC’s Na­tional Work­ing Com­mit­tee de­cides that the party’s top-six of­fi­cials must tell Zuma to re­sign and en­sure the res­ig­na­tion hap­pens be­fore the State of the Na­tion ad­dress.

FEB 4:

The ANC top six meet with Zuma at his Pre­to­ria of­fi­cial res­i­dence where they ask him to re­sign from of­fice.

FEB 5:

An ur­gent meet­ing of the ANC’s Na­tional Work­ing Com­mit­tee is called at Luthuli House where they hear a re­port-back from the of­fi­cials on their meet­ing with Zuma. The NWC hears how Zuma claims to still en­joy sup­port and his re­fusal to re­sign from of­fice. The NWC de­cides to hold an ur­gent NEC meet­ing on Wed­nes­day evening and rec­om­mends that Zuma be re­moved from of­fice.

FEB 6:

Ramaphosa meets with Zuma af­ter the SONA is post­poned in­def­i­nitely. In the meet­ing, Zuma agrees to re­sign pend­ing a num­ber of pre­con­di­tions. As a re­sult, the NEC meet­ing called for Wed­nes­day is can­celled.

FEB 7:

Ramaphosa is­sues a state­ment say­ing a de­ci­sion on Zuma’s fate will be an­nounced in the com­ing days. He says he is due to have fol­low-up dis­cus­sions with Zuma.

FEB 8:

The ANC cau­cus meets to dis­cuss Zuma’s fate. Ramaphosa ad­dresses the meet­ing.

FEB 10:

ANC top six meet to dis­cuss Zuma’s fu­ture amid pres­sure for his res­ig­na­tion to be ef­fected.
