Huguenot Seminary

-

After Dutch Reformed Church moderator Andrew Murray opened the Huguenot Seminary in Wellington in 1873, it became the blueprint for the education of girls in South Africa. Murray’s approach was based on a model developed at the Mount Holyoke Seminary in Connecticut in the US, and until the 1920s most teachers at Huguenot Seminary were American. Murray was the minister at the Dutch Reformed Church in Wellington from 1871 to 1906, and lived in the town until his death in 1917
