Sardine shoals running

-

SARDINE fever hit KZN this week with shoals netted in Scottburgh, Winklespruit, Amanzimtoti and Isipingo.

The long-awaited sardines were last seen on KZN shores in 2015.

A surprise shoal reached Scottburgh on Wednesday, and an unexpected 110 crates – there are about 30 dozen sardines per crate – were caught. Shark safety gear was removed between Scottburgh and Anstey’s Beach on the Bluff. All other shark safety gear along the coast remains in place and beaches are open for bathing.

This may change as the run develops and more gear may be removed. The last sightings were on Thursday and showed scattered pockets of sardines between Isipingo and umgababa.
