A time for introspection and reflection

- VEANTHA NAIDOO

JAYESS Jayram, right, a Zumba instructor and skills development practitioner, believes Women’s Month is a time for introspection and reflection.

“I see it as a reminder to myself to touch as many lives, positively, as possible,” she said. “With our busy lifestyles, we need these little reminders.”

This mother-of-two, who has a BA in communication science and master’s degree in business administration, is doing a doctorate in management science.

The 42-year-old is inspired by people and driven by her own experiences.

“I see every moment as an opportunity to reach a higher level. Above all, my parents taught me to never give up – there’s always a fighting chance.”

Balancing a career and family is a challenge for many women and Jayram has mastered the art through planning and organisation.

“I’ve learnt to strategically delegate responsibilities when the need arises, but most importantly, I’ve learnt to prioritise. I write everything down, everywhere. I love sticky notes, daily planners, checklists and electronic diaries.”

The Bharatanatyam (traditional dance form) graduate says dance has always been important to her, so it was logical she would become a Zumba instructor.

“I have taught Zumba for more than five years, licensed for various levels and with special editions of this aerobic fitness programme.”

Her fitness class has taken her beyond the bounds of exercise and dance.

“It has become a sisterhood,” said Jayram.

Her Women’s Month message was that women should consider their talent and the role they played in society.

Jayram said: “Women are rightfully seen as the architects of society. They have a natural ability to nurture, be empathetic and master multi-skilling.

“These are winning traits. Every woman deserves to be encouraged, motivated and supported to the point where they can see the best in themselves and give off their best to their family, friends and society.”
