Bafana have gone from bad to worse under coach Baxter

Sunday Tribune - - NEWS&VIEWS -

OUR soccer is in crisis. Some of us thought that the election of Danny Jordaan as the president of Safa a few years ago would solve these problems.

But it seems as if our soccer has gone from bad to worse. The backto-back defeat of South Africa by minnows Cape Verde is a disgrace.

Cape Verde is a small country with a population of less than a million.

It would be unfair to blame the players, though. The culprits are Safa leaders and the coaching staff led by Stuart Baxter.

Baxter has messed up big time. He has failed to select the correct players to start the game.

He persistently selected Dean Furman ahead of Andile Jali, who has superior defensive and attacking capabilities. And he ignored Percy Tau in favour of the ineffective Lebogang Manyama.

His tactics and strategies are below average. Bafana Bafana would have beaten Cape Verde if the tactics applied were correct in the second game in Durban.

Our team had a lot of possession but could not unlock Cape Verde’s defence. Creative players such as Thulani Serero were missed. Unfortunately he was benched the whole game. What is most disturbing about this coach is that he is stubborn. Instead of apologising, he always offers excuses.

Our soccer has been in the doldrums for a long time. Safa leaders need to tell the nation why Baxter was reappointed because he failed dismally when he coached Bafana Bafana before. It cannot be business as usual; we need answers. ROMANIUS ZULU Morningside

Deputy mayor is doing excellent work

I WRITE in response to “Police operation busts three suspected drug merchants” on page 6 last week by Nabeelah Shaikh.

Excellent work, deputy mayor Fawzia Peer, for getting all police forces involved. It’s so good to see senior ANC members trying to help get rid of drug merchants.

Peer, you have the blessings and thanks of many parents who are tired of drugs being so freely available. If there were more like you, the ANC wouldn’t lose wards. ZAHIR DANBAR
