- THAHIR ASMAL

IN AN exciting end to the Kwadukuza Volleyball Association season, Grove End and Warriors Sport won the Premier and Division 1 KO Cup in Stanger last week.

Grove End came from a set down to beat old foe KSST in a thrilling final by two sets to one. KSST won the first set, but the momentum shifted Grove End’s way in the second.

Their experienced setter, Desmond Chetty, unleashed the power-hitting of Vinnie Singh and Niven Baldeo, who helped force the game into a final set. In the deciding set, KSST defended gallantly, but still could not stop Singh and Baldeo as Grove End romped to a 15-13 victory.

In the Division 1 final, Warriors Sport clawed their way back into the contest against Darnall to also win

2-1. The two teams finished top of the log after the round-robin stage and dispatched Frends and Cool Leaders in the semi-finals respectively.

Darnall began with the psychological edge of having beaten their opponents twice and raced into an early lead. Warriors did well to not let them run away, but eventually lost the set 25-22.

And the first set losers refused to be overawed by the occasion, returning looking like a different team in the second set. Big attacks from Nolan Warriors Sport beat Darnall to win the Kwadukuza Volleyball Association Division 1 KO Cup. Govender and Daniel John put Darnall on the back foot. Playmaker Sam Pillay helped his side to a convincing 25-16 set win. The third and decisive set brought out the best of these two teams. Some outstanding defensive work at the net by Rama Govender and Sigen Kisten gave Warriors the advantage and in the end they ran out 15-11 winners.
