R100m for Gupta weddings

- IOL

THE controversial Gupta family is set to host a double wedding in Abu Dhabi, with celebrations set to cost the family R100 million over several days.

The weddings are for Rajesh Gupta’s daughter, Shubhangi Singhala, who will marry Akhya Bansel.

The double wedding celebrations are expected to take place from February 19 to 23 at an upmarket Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi.

The Gupta family are known for their lavish weddings, such as the notorious ceremony for the brothers’ niece in 2013.

The wedding was held in Sun City and was allegedly funded using money meant to fund a farming project for disadvantaged farmers in the Free State.

The Estina dairy farm project was purportedly established by the Free State government to help uplift underprivileged farmers. The project was allocated over R220m and only R2m was spent on the farm. None of the people who were destined to benefit received anything from the project.

The wedding also involved a controversy over the Guptas’ plane being given clearance to avoid customs and passport control by landing at Waterkloof Air Force Base.
