STAFF REPORTER FORMER president Nelson Mandela is still critical but stable in hospital.

“While at times his condition becomes unstable, the doctors indicate that the former president has demonstrated great resilience and his condition tends to stabilise as a result of medical interventions,” the Presidency said in a statement yesterday.

“Doctors are still working hard to effect a turnaround and a further improvement in his health and to keep the former president comfortable, ’’ said spokesman Mac Maharaj.

Mandela has been in hospital since June.

President Jacob Zuma travels to Malaysia today on an official visit aimed at boosting social, political and economic ties.

A Lifetime Award for Global Peace to Mandela will also be awarded by the Mahathir Global Peace Foundation. Zuma will receive the award on Madiba’s behalf.
