ANOTHER man with links to Czech fugitive and alleged gangland strongman Radovan Krejcir has been murdered in Bedfordview, Joburg.

Serb Veselin Laganin was killed early yesterday at his apartment.

His death comes three weeks after Krejcir associate Bassam Issa was gunned down in the same suburb.

Laganin had appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court in February alongside Krejcir on charges of armed robbery with aggravating circumstances.

The charges relate to a shooting in Pretoria West in October last year.

Krejcir, who escaped death in July after a James Bond-style attempt on his life, refused to comment.

“Sorry, brother, I am not talking to media. Bye,” he said yesterday.

The attempt on Krejcir, in which his armoured Mercedes-Benz was peppered with bullets, was made using barrels retro-fitted behind the number plate of a hijacked VW Polo.

Private investigator Paul O’Sullivan has been investigating the alleged Bedfordview mafia over the past few years and said he expected this to happen.

“All I am saying is that he would have made a great state witness, but like all would-be state witnesses against Krejcir, he is dead,” O’Sullivan said.

Laganin ’ s apartment in the Wedgewood Green complex is about a block away from the intersection where Issa’s car was sprayed with at least 33 bullets.

Provincial police spokesman Brigadier Neville Malila confirmed that the dead man was 54-year-old Laganin.

Malila said three men had entered the residence and when Laganin’s wife woke up they were already in the bedroom.

“They told her to keep quiet. When he woke up, they shot him in the side. His wife and 12-year-old son were unharmed.”

He said jewellery and cellphones had been stolen from the house before the attackers fled.

Malila said police recovered firearms outside the property, but could not give details about how the intruders got into the secure complex.

He said all the police knew was that they had got in through an open window.

Security officers at the complex were keeping mum and neighbours were not aware that a murder had been committed.

Distraught relatives watched as police combed the scene, too emotional to speak.

Malila said they could not confirm any links between this murder and nearly 10 others linked to the underworld.

“Investigators will obviously compare notes. It’s too early to tell,” he said.

As for Issa’s murder, Malila said they had not made any arrests yet.
