Nonhle gets her TV break

A RELATIONSHIP breakdown between actress Nolwazi Shange and the Zabalaza production team has led to Nonhle Thema finally realising her dream of being a TV ingenue.
The former presenter and reality TV star will see if she has inherited her mother’s acting genes when she makes her debut on the Mzansi Magic series next month. Thema replaces Shange as the pregnant boyfriend-nagging Kgomotso.
Shange told Sunday World this week that the uncertainty of being a call actor was at the core of the rift between her and the production.
I wasn’t happy with the working conditions and that’s why I resigned,” said Shange, who had been with the series since its beginning in May. Sometimes I couldn’t cancel gigs that were booked in advance just to be on… set.”
She said she and management had tried to find a workable solution but the talks were not successful.
Unfortunately, it didn’t work out, so I made the decision to be happy and resigned.”
Series producer Burgert Muller, however, disputed that Shange was not given enough warning for her calls. Nolwazi was booked like any other call actor on the show with enough notice, and she was not available at most times.” Shange’s loss is Thema’s gain. The former Dark & Lovely spokesperson said she was excited about this new chapter, which is a continuation of her comeback after a meltdown early last year.
I feel honoured and blessed. I have always wanted to get into acting properly, said Thema, whose mother, Cynthia Shange (no relation to Nolwazi), is on Muvhango.
She started shooting in August, but will make her debut on December 2.
About her less-than-glam character, she said: I’m loving her because she’s different from me. She’s rather modest. I get to be dressed in these ordinary clothes and minimal make-up and be a nagging woman.”
Isidingo’s Jay Anstey is bemused by speculation that she has been kicked out of the SABC3 soapie.
On Friday she confirmed reports that there is confusion” whether she still has the role of Charlie. I haven t left. I had heard from a friend that they had cast someone else as Charlie,” said Anstey. She last shot scenes in January and her contract ended the next month.
Isidingo’s publicity team hadn’t responded to e-mails by the time of publication.
