FOR­MER gar­dener-turned-chef Thokozani Mpun­gose is prov­ing to be quite the culi­nary mae­stro.

The 32-year-old from KwaZulu-Natal was named Young Up & Com­ing Bak­ing Mas­ter at the Cape Leg­ends In­ter Ho­tel Chal­lenge last year and has been recog­nised as one of the top three chefs na­tion­ally in this year’s com­pe­ti­tion.

Mpun­gose, sous chef at South­ern Sun Elan­geni & Ma­ha­rani, paid trib­ute to his men­tors ex­ec­u­tive chefs Shaun Munro, Yoshan Naidu and Clin­ton Bon­homme.

I am hon­oured to be part of this amaz­ing team.

They have played a huge role in my suc­cess and I be­lieve I still have a lot to learn,” said Mpun­gose.

We are ex­tremely proud of Thokozani. It’s his first at­tempt at a culi­nary com­pe­ti­tion and he has out­done him­self,” said Munro, Tsogo Sun’s ex­ec­u­tive chef.
