Baxter overhauls Bafana squad
New-look team faces Lybia in Afcon qualifier
Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter has explainedthe many changes he’s made to the national team ahead of the clash against Libya in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday [2pm].
From his last Bafana team that played Senegal in the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers late last year, Baxter has made about 10 adjustments.
The likes of Tebogo Langerman, Wayne Sandilands, Dino Ndlovu, EricMathoho, Clayton Daniels, Morgan Gould and Andile Jali haven’t made the cut.
Bafana were also involved in the Cosafa Cup in Polokwane in June, but that squad was made up of local-based players.
“Whenwe played Senegal in November, we identified what will move us along the road to the Afcon and further on.
“From that squad to this squad, we have an 11-man swing and this is a small squad because our second game has been cancelled,” Baxter said.
He opted for a 22-man squad after failing to secure a friendly that he wanted to be played after the Libya match.
“Not all those players who are not in this squad are out of the picture,” he continued.
“I think one of the things we’ve had to change is our thinking about respecting the players.
“We can’t bebringingexperienced players to camp for one game and have them to sit on the stands for no apparent reason,” Baxter added.
Bafana assemble for camp in Johannesburg today and leave for Durban tomorrow to start their preparations.
