The nation demands answers

Sunday World - - Viewpoint -

It is tragic that within a short space of time after answering a distress call about a burning building, three firefighters trying to extinguish the blaze were dead.

The building, housing three provincial departments in Joburg CBD, is said to have been highly unsafe and not compliant with minimum safety standards.

The government must tell the nation how the brave firefighters essentially went into a death trap. One firefighter plunged to his death and his colleagues died from smoke inhalation.

With three families having lost their sons, fathers and breadwinners, we need to interrogate the level of training our firefighters are given and if they were out of their depth to deal with this situation.
