Makape to sing lungs out for mom
Cancer survivor inspires ‘Idols’ push
Idols SA contestant Thato Makape will dedicate his performance this evening to his mother as part of observing Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
This after his mom, Mathilda, survived her battle against lung cancer.
Makape, 23, from the Karoo town of Postmasburg in the Northern Cape, said his mother developed cancer three years ago, leaving him “hustling” to put food on the table while she was undergoing chemotherapy.
“I used my barber skills to eke out a living,” he said, adding that he later realised he could also make use of his singing talent to make a living.
He started singing along to gospel musician Deborah Fraser’s Thapelo Ya Morena hit song when he was four years old.
“I am happy now that mom is completely healed. I can now follow my singing dream,” Makape said.
Makape will be battling for a place in the top five at the State Theatre in Pretoria today.
