Port Alfred Bowling and Croquet Club

THE finals of the Mary Hobbs competition were played on July 5 and congratulations to the winners, Rosemary Wood and Julie Sliziuk. Runners-up were Helen Cowie and Noleen Kirsten.

The winners of the Ocean Basket competition were David Freeme, Maureen Heale and John Gie. Well done!

The first round of the Men’s Open Singles will be played on Wednesday July 19. The Club Mixed trips is still ongoing.

The finals of the Eastern Province Ladies’ and Men’s Fours will be played at our club over this weekend, July 15 and 16 and we wish good bowling to the following club players who will be participating: Jane Armitage, Maureen Heale, Sylvia Prevost, Adele Wood, Colette Reid, Wendy Pfotenhauer, Jenny Frost and Sue Purdon as well as our men’s team of Anton Strombeck, Michael Benedito, Lynton Perry and Hein Strombeck. Duties for the week, July 18 to 22: Tabs – Phil Taylor and Kaye Wong, Bar – Trevor Frost and Eddie Senar, Ironing – Colin Barnard.

Kowie Bowling Club

Last Tuesday we had a good turnout for the Megabucks competition and Jacques Krige and his trip of Lawrie May and Lucia Nel were in fine form to defeat Bob Ford’s team 10 / + 18 and take home the “bucks”.

Michael van der Sandt’s team of trips won the runner-up position in defeating Jackie Kriel’s team.

Last Thursday for the Megabucks competition we had another good turnout of bowlers and we welcomed Joey Campbell back on the greens after a long layoff. Lovely to have you back.

After the last round of bowls Jacques Krige came second to winner Keith Kolesky and his team of trips, Margarette Stegmann and Rob Walker, who won by full house 10 points and a big shot profit to take home the “big bucks”. The runner-up was Pieter Stegmann and his trips who defeated Jackie Kriel’s team by 8 points to 2.

Last weekend Kowie Club hosted the finals of the EA Men’s fours competition and the four teams competing were Stan Long (Albany), Anton Strombeck (PA), Jacques Krige (Kowie) and Chris Avis (Kowie). Round 1 took place on Saturday and rounds 2 and 3 on Sunday, with some very closely contested games taking place. By lunch on Sunday only Strombeck’s team had a full 4 points and then in Round 3 Krige won his first game in a convincing defeat of Strombeck. Avis had a convincing win over Long’s team to take the runner-up position on 4 points +9 shot profit. Strombeck’s team were the winners on 4 /+13 shot profit.

The prize-giving took place at the completion of the competition at around 4.30pm. Ron Orford of EA was on hand for the prize giving. Both winner Strombeck and runner-up Avis will play in the EP Men’s Finals competition at Port Alfred Club this weekend, July 15 and 16, with six other clubs from EP and Midlands.

On Saturday, with the EA competition on, we played tabs bowls, a Courtyard competition, with three rinks taking part. The winners of the Courtyard vouchers were Stan Richter’s team of Lawrie May and Lennie Clarke who defeated John Hubbard’s team by 2 points and a good shot profit. Mike Beaumont’s team defeated Tony Brown’s team to take the runner-up position. Duties for the week July 17-23: Greens – (Roll) Michael van der Sandt, (Mark) Stan Richter and Robert Sandilands, Tabs – (Cash) Flame Metter (not available), Bar – Mike Beaumont and Roger Purdon.

Kenton Bowling Club

We are very proud of our Pippa Swift having been selected to represent Eastern Areas (EA) in the upcoming Ladies Mini-Districts tournament to be held at Port Alfred. It is well deserved as she was runner-up in the EP Ladies Novices earlier this year. We wish her all the best and good bowling.

The extreme weather conditions are playing havoc with our greens. Despite the berg winds and absence of rain, our greenkeepers have managed to maintain our greens in a reasonable condition. Our water reserves are fast depleting and prudent watering practices have to followed.

The annual Market Square Volkswagen mixed fours competition was held last Wednesday. Several of their vehicles were on display and their company banners lent a festive atmosphere to the occasion. We had a good turnout, and Ruth Low’s foursome won the day with a perfect score of 10 points. Prize money was awarded to the first four places.

Thursday was Seeff Supa Thursday and Don Young and his partner won the pairs competition. Prize money was sponsored by Seeff Properties augmented by R5 per-entrant-kitty.

On Friday, the attendance draw of R900 was forfeited by Terry Bowen for not being present to collect the money. Next week’s jackpot goes up to R1 000.

“Burger King” West treated our members to his Gourmet Beef Burgers for Fridays’ Fabulous Feast. The king-sized beef patties accompanied by chips, fried onions, cheese slice and fresh pineapple, lettuce and tomato were a hit with everybody. The various sauces added a bit of spice (some more than others!) to a delicious meal.

Saturday’s tabs-in prize money was won by George Chowles and his team.

Three of our teams have entered in next weekend’s EA Men’s Pairs tournament. Lionel Howarth/Brian Aldag, Roy Wilkins/Ivor Rule and Rob Croly/Bill Bedford will be representing our club. It has always been a tough competition and we are sure that they will do us proud. We wish them well.

Urgent reminder: Remember to nominate your preferred candidate(s) for next year’s committee.

Nominations close on July 17! Duties for the week July 17-23: Tabs – Ken Nixon, Bar – The Crandons. Events (July 13-19): July 13 – Round 2 of Club League, July 17 – Nominations for new committee closes.

Birthdays (July 13-19): 13 – Ian Edwards, 14 – David Cunningham, 14 – Ian Smith, 16 – Marlene van Rensburg, 17 – Ollie Davis.

Eastern Areas

The men’s fours competition was completed last weekend with Anton Strombeck of the Port Alfred bowling club skipping his team of son Hein Strombeck, Leyton Perry and Michael Benedito to victory.

The runners-up were Chris Avis and his team of Siggie Rohrs, Alan Sheridan and Dave Thomas. Going into the final match of the weekend Anton’s team were looking like sure fire winners and the only “real match” was to see which team would be runners-up, and also go through to the EP finals to be played this coming weekend.

However, it ended up being much closer than anyone thought, with Chris Avis’s team not only beating the fancied Stan Long’s team, but beating them soundly. At the same time Anton’s team was also well beaten by Jacques Krige’s team, meaning that with two ends to go the 31 shot profit that Anton enjoyed at the start, had been whittled down to only four! They held their nerve though and won through on the day to become Eastern Areas fours champions. Well done.
