ONE man was fatally injured and another is in a critical condition after an accident on the R67 late on Saturday evening.

The accident occurred 17km outside Bathurst towards Grahamstown and details, at this point, are still unverified and being investigated.

The news that the passenger, a 20-year-old former PJ Olivier pupil, Hendrik Olivier, lost his life in the accident has shaken the Grahamstown and Port Alfred communities.

Reports indicate the vehicle crashed into a tree and the occupants had to be removed by the Jaws of Life. The driver is currently in ICU in a Port Elizabeth hospital with severe injuries.

Police spokeswoman Captain Mali Govender confirmed the events and said that Olivier died on impact.

“The vehicle hit a tree,” Govender said. “It is not known what happened to cause the accident.”

A case of culpable homicide is being investigated.

Meanwhile condolences have been pouring in from social media sites, expressing shock and grief for the families and friends of both men.
