Revved up for OD Inggs Memorial Run
Port Alfred ready to host annual rally event
HE 19th Annual OD Inggs Memorial Run will be held in and around Port Alfred on March 24 and 25.
This run is organised by the Albany Vintage and Classic Motor Club as a tribute to the late OD Inggs, a well-known and respected Grahamstown businessman.
He was also widely known and respected for his collection and knowledge of vintage and classic motor cars.
The run will once again be held in the Albany District with competitors navigating a route comprising 300km on the first day and 100km on the
Tsecond. With all the stop/go’s and other forms of road reconstruction compiling an interesting route has become a huge challenge for the clerk of the course and his team.
The rally is held under national rules and guidelines and at no time are vehicles allowed to exceed 80% of the speed limit. This presents a huge challenge as the speedometers in the vehicle are covered up for the duration of the rally.
The speed of the vehicles is calculated by navigators using a stop watch and observing road markings and other signs on the roads.
Teams will consist of a driver and a navigator. They will receive the route schedule 30 minutes before their scheduled starting time. While the navigator will be trying to decipher the route schedule the driver will be making sure that the car is in order.
One point is added per second for early or late arrival at a control point. The team with the lowest number of points at the completion of the two days is the winner.
The first car leaves the Rosehill Mall at 9.30am on the Saturday while the rest leave at one minute intervals. After a lunch en route the competitors will return to Port Alfred. A dinner has been organised for competitors and officials at the Port Alfred River and Ski-boat Club on Saturday evening.
The starting point on Sunday will also be the Rosehill Mall at 8.30am, following a shorter route, with a tea break along the way. The cars will then proceed to the Royal Port Alfred Golf Club just after noon for the prize-giving and lunch. Trophies will be presented to the winning team. Trophies are also awarded to the best navigator, first lady competitor, winning club trophy and to the oldest car entered.
