Arts Festival hit by major power failure

Talk of the Town - - News -

GRAHAMSTOWN was hit by two major power failures on Monday evening – lasting about five hours in total – and both were attributed to the high winds experienced in the district at the time and which led to Eskom transformers tripping.

Thousands of visitors have descended upon Grahamstown for the annual National Arts Festival, and they and residents were experiencing extremely cold weather at the time of the power failures. While some of the festival shows on offer at the time of the power failures were equipped with their own generators, others were not, and many shows were left in the dark and cancelled.

The bigger supermarkets and restaurants have their own back-up generators, and it was business as usual on a very cold Monday night in a Grahamstown that was being buffeted by exceptionally high winds.
