Victors pip rivals Mighty Forest 4-3 from penalty spot
COSMOS FC prevailed 4-3 on penalties in a tense final of a mini-tournament against Mighty Forest last weekend as the two Nemato sides battled it out for the trophy. In a tense battle, the teams ended 1-1 after 90-minutes of regulation time. They proceeded to a penalty shootout where Cosmos FC just managed to pip their rivals 4-3. Eight teams took part in the tournament. The final was jam-packed with energy and intensity, with both teams appearing evenly-matched.
The first 10 minutes of the final provided fireworks and, it was clear that both teams were determined to win. Mighty Forest seemed to be the better team throughout, netting their goal in the 60th minute of the second half.
They bossed the park with slick short passes that threw their opponents off their game.
Although they dominated possession because of their short passing game, they struggled to penetrate a disciplined Cosmos FC defence.
A clear indication of this, was the fact that they did not create many scoring opportunities, with only two clear chances on target over the entire 90 minutes, with Cosmos FC goalkeeper, Mhlangovuyo Jiki, pulling off what can only be called “superhero” saves from those attempts..
Cosmos FC stuck to its game-plan, playing route one football, sending long balls into the air for most of the 90 minutes. That game-plan was centred around two strikers up front, that ultimately paid off, when they netted the equaliser – via the penalty spot – just two minutes from the end. A long ball was played from the centre of the field straight to the striker who was tripped inside the 18-yard box, denying the attacker a scoring opportunity. The referee did not hesitate to point to the penalty spot.
Simisikhaya Mlamla stepped up to bury the ball in the back of the net. This must have been a bitter pill for Forest to swallow, considering that the goal came in the dying embers of the game.
The finalists then proceeded to the penalty shootout where it ended with captain taking on captain in the Cosmos FC net. The Mighty Forest captain’s first kick was saved by Cosmos FC’s captain Jiki. He saved another, thus winning the game for Cosmos.
