An act of kindness and generosity saw about 100 Grade 4 pupils get their eyes tested free of charge by Dean Radue and his caring team at the Port Alfred branch of DM Radue Optometrists.

Johan van der Merwe and Chumisa Magopeni from DM Radue Optometrists travelled to Ikamvalesizwe Combined School in Kenton to test children’s vision. These children fall under the JOT (Jesus Our Teacher) Reading Club programme that is presented at the school as an extra-mural activity.

Marian Rousseau, who is part of the JOT reading programme, said it was very rare in our society today to have people doing these acts of kindness, and when they do they need to be appreciated.

“In Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen’s Chicken Soup series of books, one comes across many random acts of kindness. These generous deeds are done by someone or a group of people exclusively for the benefit of others.

“Amazingly, the donors do not expect any compensation,” Rousseau said.

“In this tough world, it is absolutely fabulous to know that random acts of kindness are not only happening somewhere out there, but are also taking place in our very own backyard.”

She said they had identified pupils in need of further eye testing and they will also be choosing their frames and all of this was done free of charge.

She thanked Radue Optometrists for their kindness.

“Now that the screening is complete, Van der Merwe has identified a group of pupils in need of further eye testing at the Port Alfred practice.

“The very able office manager, Dean, has helped us to coordinate times and dates and one group of children have already been for visual assessment.

“Of this group, some children have enthusiastically chosen their frames for their new spectacles which they will receive free of charge,” Rousseau said.

“Thank you so to all at Radue Optometrists. JOT really appreciates you making time to not only help our children with eye screening, but to interact with them in a friendly, caring way that affirms their personal worth. We salute you,” she said.
