Gunn, Smith show enthrals
Virtuoso guitarist Jake Gunn delighted a small Port Alfred audience when he played with Devin Smith at Harry B’s on the Kowie last Thursday.
Based in Cape Town, the duo have been touring the coast as far as Port Alfred. Gunn, who is well-established on the live music circuit in the Western Cape, previously performed in Port Alfred a few months ago with South African blues legend Piet Botha.
Gunn was supporting Botha at the time. This time however, he headlined the show.
Playing a mix of rock and blues covers and some of his own compositions, the concert was a laid-back acoustic version of the full-band rock sound on Gunn’s 2012 album,
Giving the CD a listen after the show, I could pick up some of the influences on Gunn’s music, like The Rolling Stone and Santana, which he paid tribute to among the covers he played on the night.
Both Gunn and Smith are incredibly talented guitarists, and alternated singing lead on the covers as well as taking turns playing rhythm while the other played the lead licks and hooks.
Both are capable singers too, with Smith doing justice to some whiskey-soaked blues classics.
They started the show with a lesser-known Rolling Stones song that sounded like it could have come from the rock anthem,
which had the audience singing along.
Bob Dylan’s songs also featured in the show, including and
. Having become accustomed to hearing mostly the Jimi Hendrix electric version of this song, it was great to hear a bluesy acoustic version.

By audience request, towards the end of the show, Gunn and Smith also played a Neil Young song, but an unlikely gem called
It’s a pity there was such a small turnout, as locals missed out on some great live music. Gunn said he would like to return during the
