Gunn, Smith show en­thrals

Vir­tu­oso gui­tarist Jake Gunn de­lighted a small Port Al­fred au­di­ence when he played with Devin Smith at Harry B’s on the Kowie last Thurs­day.

Based in Cape Town, the duo have been tour­ing the coast as far as Port Al­fred. Gunn, who is well-es­tab­lished on the live mu­sic cir­cuit in the West­ern Cape, pre­vi­ously per­formed in Port Al­fred a few months ago with South African blues leg­end Piet Botha.

Gunn was sup­port­ing Botha at the time. This time how­ever, he head­lined the show.

Play­ing a mix of rock and blues cov­ers and some of his own com­po­si­tions, the con­cert was a laid-back acous­tic ver­sion of the full-band rock sound on Gunn’s 2012 al­bum,

Giv­ing the CD a lis­ten after the show, I could pick up some of the in­flu­ences on Gunn’s mu­sic, like The Rolling Stone and San­tana, which he paid trib­ute to among the cov­ers he played on the night.

Both Gunn and Smith are in­cred­i­bly ta­lented gui­tarists, and al­ter­nated singing lead on the cov­ers as well as tak­ing turns play­ing rhythm while the other played the lead licks and hooks.

Both are ca­pa­ble singers too, with Smith do­ing jus­tice to some whiskey-soaked blues clas­sics.

They started the show with a lesser-known Rolling Stones song that sounded like it could have come from the rock an­them,

which had the au­di­ence singing along.

Bob Dy­lan’s songs also fea­tured in the show, in­clud­ing and

. Hav­ing be­come ac­cus­tomed to hear­ing mostly the Jimi Hen­drix elec­tric ver­sion of this song, it was great to hear a bluesy acous­tic ver­sion.

In be­tween Gunn played three tracks from his al­bum – the haunt­ing the Spring­steen-like

and the aptly named

Also well-re­ceived was San­tana’s ver­sion of San­tana’s singing gui­tar style can also be heard on

By au­di­ence re­quest, to­wards the end of the show, Gunn and Smith also played a Neil Young song, but an un­likely gem called

It’s a pity there was such a small turnout, as lo­cals missed out on some great live mu­sic. Gunn said he would like to re­turn dur­ing the
