Lions aiming for perfection

- Nick Gordon

You’d think that going through their first three matches in the Ram Slam T20 unbeaten would put the Highveld Lions at ease.

But instead the table-toppers are hard at work ironing out a couple of creases in their performances so far, even if the wet Johannesburg weather means it needs to be done in their indoor facilities at the Wanderers.

“They’re going well on the results column but we’re not completely happy with the way we’ve played. There are a few facets of our game that need some attention,” captain Neil McKenzie (above) said.

“It obviously doesn’t help when it’s raining so we’re trying to get the best out of the indoor school,” he added before identifying the role of the bowlers at the death as one of the areas of concern.

“Death bowling always needs work especially if you’ve got exciting fast bowlers like we have. It’s a serious bowling unit and they know they’ve been under par at the moment,” McKenzie said.

“Up front we can take a few more wickets and be more aggressive and at the death have clearer plans in what we can do.

“The talent and fire is there, it’s just about getting in the performance and the confidence.”

The Lions got the better of the Knights on the weekend – albeit on a boundary count after the two sides were level after regulation play and again in the super over – and will welcome the Cape Cobras to the Wanderers tomorrow.
