The corrupt probing corruption
Iwas pleasantly surprised to read that Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu, pictured, intends asking the country’s prosecuting authorities to actively investigate what has happened to the billions of taxpayers’ money lost through wasteful and irregular expenditure (that he has been reporting year in and year out). It is unaccounted for, misspent, or stolen – and no one is held accountable.
It is about time that something is done, as there was no action so far from our parliamentarians, directors-general of the different ministries and other top officials and executives of the SOEs. He said “the levels of accountability in government is extremely low and there are not sufficient consequences for anyone involved”.
But to be honest, I am not holding my breath that anything will happen, as all the top investigative units – the Hawks, the PP’s office and the NPA – are all heavily compromised, as we see daily splashed across electronic and print media. Good intentions without the will to pursue the thieves won’t have results. Jean Michel, Bryanston
