Is­lamic schools’ safety slammed

Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia faced mount­ing calls for stronger reg­u­la­tion of re­li­gious schools af­ter a hor­rific fire at an Is­lamic board­ing school killed 23 on Thurs­day.

Na­tional daily The Star said 1 034 fires oc­curred in reg­is­tered and un­reg­is­tered re­li­gious schools from Au­gust 2015 to Au­gust 2017.

Fam­ily mem­bers of Mo­hamad Haikal Ab­dul­lah, a 12-year-old who died, were fu­ri­ous af­ter re­ports that the only door to the dor­mi­tory had caught fire and the win­dows were barred, trap­ping the boys. – Reuters
