Storm dam­age as­ses­sors fan out

The San­tam Group has dis­patched spe­cial claims teams to ar­eas af­fected by this week’s cat­a­strophic weather con­di­tions across large swathes of the coun­try.

A se­vere storm and flash floods bat­tered pub­lic build­ings, com­mer­cial prop­er­ties, hous­ing in­fra­struc­ture, roads and bridges and wa­ter and elec­tric­ity in­fras­truc- ture in Gaut­eng, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga on Mon­day and Tues­day, leav­ing 11 peo­ple dead.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Wil­lies Mchunu said the es­ti­mated costs of re­pair­ing the prov­ince’s 133 dam­aged schools was R136.5 mil­lion.

San­tam’s ex­ec­u­tive head of claims, Ebrahim As­mal, said: “We will be in a bet­ter po­si­tion to pro­vide a view on the im­pact of these ex­treme weather con­di­tions in the next 48 hours.”

Mchunu has de­clared KwaZulu-Natal a dis­as­ter area while Gaut­eng Premier David Makhura also de­clared parts of Gaut­eng dis­as­ter ar­eas. – ANA
