Davido sets the bar high

MTV recognised artists from around the globe with Worldwide Act Awards and Best Local Act Awards for multiple regions – including Spain, Netherlands, Japan and Nigeria – at the MTV EMAs held at The SSE Arena in Wembley, London recently.
Worldwide Act recognises those artists who have evolved their footprint and established their names beyond their local borders in 2017.
They are selected from all the regional EMA award nominees by an international panel of MTV music executives.
The Best African Act was awarded to Nigerian music sensation Davido, whose music has managed to get people around the world moving on the dance floor.
“This is a proud moment for African talent. Congratulations to Davido for winning the Best African Act and as co-winner of the Worldwide Act at the 2017 MTV EMAs,” said Alex Okosi, executive vice-president and managing director for Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Africa and BET International, adding that all the nominees at this year’s awards serve as an inspiration to young artists on the continent. “These accolades are indicative of our commitment to elevate and unlock Africa’s collective talent and potential on a global scale,” Okosi added. “Two EMAs! This is emotional. Say hello to MTV’S EMA 2017 Best African Act and Best Worldwide Act. Thank you again world,” said Davido, who left fans raving about his massive achievement on social media, with some calling him the “entertainment king of Africa” and most congratulating him for being the only African artist to have released two music videos, with more than 20 million YouTube views each in 2017.
Davido – real name David Adedeji Adeleke – is a Nigerian recording artist, performer and record producer whose 2011 single, Dami Duro, was well-received throughout Nigeria, managing to secure a spot for him in the entertainment world, where he later established his own music label, Davido Music Worldwide (DMW).
The 24-year-old if hit-maker dedicated his Best African Act award to a special woman in his life. “Thank you everybody. This is for you mom,” he said.
This year’s MTV EMAs opened with Best Hip-Hop winner Eminem doing an orchestra-backed performance, along with guest artist Skylar Grey, of his newly dropped track Walk on Water.
