Duduzane got what he deserved

-

The only point that was valid in your editorial in Tuesday’s paper – Wrong message, wrong time – was the unnecessary shackling of Duduzane Zuma, pictured, during his court appearance on charges of corruption.

Sure only dangerous individuals should be restrained, but to suggest he will be a martyr for the cause of radical economic transformation is absurd. Also, having voluntarily surrendered to the police is hardly mitigating, neither is his innocent looking demeanour.

He faces serious accusations of being involved in state capture which cost the poor an improved life, which also caused the country reputational damage.

His wealth is not a result of his business acumen. His ill-gotten gains requires an explanation and the fact he was forced to surrender his passport indicates the authorities see him a flight risk.

He also faces a charge of culpable homicide which adds to his charge sheet.

You say his shoddy treatment will add to the feeling among Zuma supporters that his family are being unfairly targeted, when in fact their image is in tatters by associating with the Guptas and the adverse publicity that followed.

You should rather have lauded the police for carrying out their duties, showing no favours. Ted O'Connor
